Fourth of July

By / July 3, 2018 / / 0 Comments

The Fourth of July is the hallmark of summer for most of us, not only because it’s Independence Day, but also because of the warm summer heat, the barbecues, and the camaraderie. Here’s how we can celebrate our nation’s independence safely, while respecting others, and still having fun!

There are many cities who have banned fireworks altogether due to the fire hazards and other dangers that fireworks pose. Double check with your city to see what kind of fireworks are allowed. If they are completely illegal, many cities offer a professional firework show at a local park. some cities even have parades!

If your city does permit fireworks be sure to use these tips to ensure a safe celebration:

  • A responsible adult should be present at all times and supervise all firework activity
  • Wear safety glasses and be sure not to wear any loose articles of clothing  or  clothing that is excessively long “flowy” that can potentially get caught or stick to a fire work
  • Use fireworks OUTDOORS ONLY
  • Light one firework at a time and move away quickly
  • Always keep a bucket of water or water hose nearby
  •  Don’t experiment with homemade fireworks
  • Never carry fireworks in your pocket

Lastly, please be courteous with your neighbors! An estimated 7-20% of over 2.5 million veterans are affected by PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). According to Department of  Veteran Affairs, PTSD  can be triggered by flashing lights, loud explosive sounds, which can induce panic attacks. Be sure to ask your neighbors if they are ok with fireworks. If you have any noise canceling headphones these would be ideal for any veterans that experience PTSD.

Happy Fourth of July !
