Weatherization Day Oct 30

By / October 30, 2018 / , , / 0 Comments

Every year on October 30th, communities across America recognize today as National Weatherization Day; a day where people share success stories and show the positive impact that the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) has on home and health improvement (1).”The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) reduces energy costs for low-income households by increasing the energy efficiency of the homes while ensuring the resident’s health and safety” (2).  The WAP is the largest whole-housing energy efficiency program in the country, providing all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Native American Tribes, and the five U.S. territories funding for its core program (2). Weathering Assistance Program has not only helped impoverished homes achieve energy efficiency, but also, it has created new jobs and technologies that benefits the economy as a whole. It has helped to reduce the environmental footprint that most households create, and has helped to revitalize many communities across the country, which has helped encourage economic growth in many low income communities(2).  According to the Department of Energy, because of the WAP 8,500 jobs are supported and weatherized homes save an average of $283 on energy costs annually(2).

For Weatherization Day, many state and local agencies host events to showcase the direct impact that the WAP  has had on them. The NASCSP has planning tool kits to help agencies with site demonstrations and social media. They also provide examples of activities and themes that were done in the past years for site demos, social media, and more.
